Workplace expert Zoe Humphries, part of the renowned Steelcase Applied Research and Consulting Team, told a North West business audience at a recent Work Inc seminar that they must step up and meet the challenges faced by four different generations working side by side in the workplace.
Companies are going to find it increasingly difficult to attract and retain office workers if they fail to meet the conflicting needs of employees, young and old.
The latest projections from the Office of National Statistics indicate that nearly a third of working people in the UK will be over 50 by 2020. Across Europe increased life expectancy and decreasing birth rates are creating an ageing workforce. And yet the youngest generation already make up 11% of European office workers.
The need to create a workspace that supports different and diverse characteristics these age groups display is becoming a key challenge for many businesses. Differing strategies that companies could adopt to address these challenges were identified including;
-
alternative officing (desk sharing, mobile working or work at home programs)
-
community based planning (a new design approach which effectively balances the needs of the individual employee with those of the work group)
-
using the work environment to leverage new human behaviours required by cultural change management efforts
Work Inc would be delighted to visit your business to host this seminar or if you would like a more information about generation convergence in the workplace please call on 0113 288 6111 to find the nearest Work Inc location.
